Award Winning Artisan

Dawn entered several of her pieces of handmade jewelry into the Great Geauga County Fair, the oldest and largest fair operating in Ohio.  Not only did she win TWO blue ribbons and a third place ribbon, she won BEST OF SHOW, JEWELRY.   Dawn was stunned!

Dawn has already created several custom pieces for customers.  Of course, I am still waiting for my special request.  Guess mom is last.  She did a custom piece for another woman with a medic alert bracelet.  That is my request.  A bracelet for MY medic alert bracelet!

Dawn has no idea what to make for next year.  Where is there to go after Best of Show?

Custom Savings Bank - Adventure is out there

A customer dropped me a note with a link to a savings bank on Amazon.  She said I needed to figure out how to make one!  So I did!!

The interior is 8" x 8" and the box has an extra wide slot for money, gift cards and envelopes.  The overall box is 8.5" x 8.5" x 2.5".   My customer wanted to save up for a Disney trip, so I grabbed some Disney scrapbooking paper for the back scene.  I used vinyl on the front. My customer wanted the saying "Adventure is out there" from the movie, "Up".

I plan to more a couple more to have available at upcoming shows. If you have something special in mind, by all means, contact me!

It's Show Time!!

This week, Dawn and I are heading East to Garrestville.  It's about 26 miles from us.  Here's the flyer:

I have some new things for this show.

A couple grapevine wreaths with fall decorations.

A large fall floral arrangement.

A little fox habitat with wood chip, moss and succulents. It comes with a tea light to illuminate.

Hoping to see some local friends there!  Have a great weekend.  The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow and we sure are planning a good show!

Exciting News!

Dawn and I have opened a new Shopify Store!!   It will take us some time to get everything we take to the craft fairs entered, but it is up and running.

My hummingbird shadow box was bought at the last craft fair. Guess I will be needing to make another. For now, I have this shadowbox. The ability to have this handy Buy Now button.. is awesome. Plus, we have a store over on Facebook. Same products. Oh! And here is the url to the Store!

Christmas In July - July 30th

Dawn and I will be at the Lakewood Elks Lodge this coming Sunday.  I took a photo of our set up last week I would like to share.

Dawn's belly belt is draped across the front of the table.   I snapped a photo of Dawn working on a bracelet.  Adjustments are done for free and her first sale required about an inch reduction.   It was another vendor and she thought her daughter would love the bracelet.  It was purchased for a Christmas present.

Product Review - Memory Professional Artists' Gouache Color

In the scope of my work with PaperCraft Happy DT, I volunteered to do optional product reviews.  Pretty cool, yes?  So here is my first review.

Memory Artists Watercolor Paint Set 24 Colors is available on Amazon.  I am a Prime Member, so I did receive the set of paints in the two day time frame.  The set was shipped in a padded envelope along with another product I had ordered (sticker set).  Consequently, there were no issues with the ordering or shipping that required me to talk with customer service or the seller, Lanpo Painting Materials & Pen Co., Ltd.

While the product description is fairly accurate, it fails to include that these are Gouache Water Color.     This is stated on the box, along the side, but you don't even see it in the photos.  So what is Gouache?
Wikipedia defines Gouache as follows:  Gouache, body color, opaque watercolor, or guache, is one type of watermedia, paint consisting of pigment, water, a binding agent (usually dextrin or gum arabic), and sometimes additional inert material. Gouache is designed to be used with opaque methods of painting. The term, derived from the Italian guazzo, also refers to paintings using this opaque method.  Therein lies the difference between these watercolors and watercolors you may be expecting!

These Gouache Water Colour paints truly are vibrant. They are faster drying and allow for layering to control your color.  The paints mix with water as you would expect and you can blend them together to create your own shades.

What they won't do...  they don't "splatter" like watercolors.  A particular technique of painting with watercolors. The Gouache paints also do not react with salt the way a watercolor would.  I love to use salt, another technique in watercolor painting.

What they will do... Gouache paints can be used in airbrushing, where a water color paint could not.
So what is the advantage of using gouache instead of watercolor and vice versa?  There's the obvious answer to that question: Watercolor is transparent and gouache is opaque. You use what you need based on the effect that you want.  Another advantage to using gouache is that you can cover just about all of your line work.

Why is this all important you may ask.  If you are at all like I was, I was truly expecting watercolors! Thankfully, my husband stepped in and explained to me the differences. Or I would never have known.  The "Gouache" along the side of the box meant way more to Joe. All this said, let me show you two photos.  One is a painting I did with watercolor.  One is a painting I did with these gouache water colours. Both paintings were done on Studio 71 140 lb watercolor paper.

Bunny painted with watercolors
Using Royal & Langnickel and Winsor & Newton watercolor
which are technically beginner watercolors

Iris painted with Gouache Water Color
Using Memory Professional Artists' Gouache Colour

By the way, clean up was a snap, as with watercolors. Hint:  a little dab will do you!!  I put way too much of a dab of paint in my palette! I would just like to see the description or title include the all important "Gouache" delineator!  And maybe a better proofreader.  The tube of Scarlet paint was misspelled! It was "Scalet".  Very minor point.  Otherwise, the paints are awesome!

More than paper....

By this time, you probably are thinking I'm all about the paper.  Not so!!  When I went to the Scrapbook Expo last year, I was amazed at how easily one could make pendants.

My first group are all butterflies and dragonflies.  (Now that shouldn't surprise anyone!)  I put one up on Etsy. Click the image to go to the Etsy store.

In case you missed the new page I added, I have put a schedule of events where Dawn and I will be locally.  These events have been confirmed. Hope to see some of our local friends there!!

2 Crafty Critters Crazies Card Challenge (Part 2)

In my internet travels, I ran across this 2 Crafty Critter Crazies card challenge.  I was creating some new cards yesterday and made two different cards with critters.  In order to link them properly, they must be separate posts.

I created both of these cards using the Maker's Mart monthly card kit for May, 2017.  Maker's Mart is Spellbinders for those who aren't already aware.  All of the components of these two cards are from the kit, except for the adhesives.

This week's Monday Challenge at Simon Says Stamps is "Little Critters"   There are some critters smaller than a hummingbird, but not many!!  The challenge does not limit us to cards.  This week I have created a Shadow Box.  A Hummingbird paperscape has been mounted on a canvas.  To prepare the canvas, I treated acrylic paints like watercolors.  Keeping the canvas wet, I applied salt and then dried the canvas.  Here is the photo of the finished project. I did experience some difficulty take a photo of the entire product.  Reflections were not friend today. Supplies are list below.

I haven't really been able to do any scrapbooking or card making for some time now.  I have gradually been getting back into working with paper.  I missed it.  I also found I needed some sort of inspiration. Enter the Simon Says Stamps Challenges. The Monday Challenge was "We've Got Your Number".  Rather simple.  The requirement is that your project had to have a number.  I chose to make a graduation card using the school colors of my home town, red and black.

Mixed Glitter Technique for Elegant Background Papers by Heartfelt Creations

Superb tutorial from Emma Lou!  I have been practicing this some this morning.  It makes a super huge difference!!

Here are the must haves to accomplish this look.

Designer Dries Clear AdhesiveMetal Tip for Adhesive Bottles Crystal Ultrafine Transparent Glitter

Now look hard. There are THREE images!!  See the tiny spots of glitter?

This is one of my practice pieces from this morning.  I used a portion of a paper from the Flowering Dogwood Paper Collection.   I shared it with my daughter and she agrees it lends a 3D look to your paper!

I have also reached a decision.  I have now tried both a Funnel Tray  and a coffee filter.  I find that the coffee filter is far easier to use in recovering left over glitter. Still on the fence over which is easier with embossing powders.

Back to practicing for me!
